PS3 Firmware 2.40 Pulled for "Further Testing"

Sony has told Next-Gen that PS3's firmware 2.40 has been temporarily taken down following problems with the update for some users.
"We are aware of a limited number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PS3," read a statement from SCEA. "While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update.
"In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."
SCEA did not state when the update will be re-released.
The new firmware, which added in-game XMB access and trophy achievement support, launched on Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, threads began popping up on the official PlayStation forums with gamers saying the update locked up their consoles.
- next-Gen.biz
However, Sony's 2.40 firmware - whenever it comes back to us, at any rate - allows the implementation of achievement-style trophies to your user account.
Like achievements, it'll probably turn out to be a successful move, convincing PS3 owners to spend more time with their games than they may otherwise have without them. But with the trophy system having to be manually added to each game already out on the PS3, when can we realistically expect most games to include the feature? Well, realistically, not soon, and Insomniac's Bryan Intihar gives us the perfect example why, posting on the PlayStation Blog:
"Currently, there are no plans to add trophies to [Resistance] and [Ratchet & Clank]. Right now, our No. 1 focus is finishing [Resistance 2] and making it the best game possible"
Suggesting that, sadly (for you), implementing them takes longer than five minutes, and that Insomniac - like a lot of develolpers, we're sure - have more pressing matters to attend to.

Valve has announced the release of the Palermo update for "Day of Defeat: Source," adding 51 achievements, enhanced scoreboards with player avatars, detailed player statistics that are integrated with the Steam Community features, and the new Palermo map.
"In addition, this update adds support for popular features introduced in Valve's Team Fortress 2 (TF2), the PC title named multiplayer game of the year by Gamespy.com and PC Gamer. These include "nemesis/revenge" freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for TF2.
Finally, this update also introduces a new map, Palermo, which is a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno, originally created by Magnar "insta" Jennsen."

How to fix Sony PS3 Call of Duty 4 connection problems
Saturday 28 June 2008 - 06:29:37Posted by Mindwipe

PS3 Daily have given a personal account of their experiences with Call of Duty 4 and the connection problems you get, they have wrote a detailed post about how they love the game but also have nothing but connection problems on the Sony PS3. The good news is they have found a way to fix this after presuming it to be a Tiscali problem.

While we know that many other COD4 gamers on the Tiscali broadband service have also reported this P2P problem, it must be true that Tiscali has some part to play or they would not have thousands of gamers complaining in their forums. The main problem is not with finding a game with people you do not know in COD4, but it seems to come from connecting to friends. As a Playstation 3 owner on BT, I have also seen this problem with certain friends but others seem to connect just fine.
Have you had any trouble connecting to your friends in Call of Duty 4 on the Sony PS3 or Xbox 360?
PS3 Daily is unsure if Tiscali still have the P2P problem as they said, “Are they still having problems? Let me explain, as said above playing online gamers allows me to connect and play away but playing friends is a no go. Well I have found a way to get connections all the time when you have troubles”. If they are able to get connected by changing a setting then surely it cannot be their ISP or can it?
The way they have found to get connected to friends in COD 4 seems very annoying and something I personally would not have fun doing, surely there is a better way. Maybe changing ISP’s could help. Visit PS3 Daily and see how they found a way to get connected and also let us know if you have any problems inviting friends for a game.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced a third instalment in hit action-RPG series Diablo at its Worldwide Invitational event in Paris.
A CG animated video of Diablo III was shown at the event. The game's lead designer, Jay Wilson, then came onto the stage to demo the game, showcasing some of the title's classes and levels.
Several new gameplay features were revealed, including the addition of quick skills being added to mouse wheel and tab key as well as the left and right mouse buttons. Wilson promised the controls will be "so simple that you can play it with just the mouse".
The Diablo III announcement was made at the opening ceremony of Blizzard's Worldwide Invitiational event in Paris, at the Porte de Versailles Exposition Centre.
The game was introduced with a telltale steel guitar riff, played live, and a lush cinematic video. The video showed a world in ruins and armies marching through fields of fire.
Jay Wilson, lead designer, demoed the game, first introducing the barbarian class. The barbarian slew hundreds of demons on water-covered walkways in a dark temple. A minimal interface appeared a streamlined version of Diablo II's. Quick skills will now be added to mouse wheel and Tab key as well as the left and right mouse buttons. Wilson promised it would all be "so simple that you can play it with just the mouse".
Elsewhere, a new drop has been added to the game - red globes that allow speedy health recovery. The environment is fully destructible and very beautifully rendered in the familiar isometric perspective. The effects in particular are stunning. The barbarian was also shown jumping over a destroyed bridge and killing more zombies by smashing a destructible wall down on their heads. He killed tens of enemies at once with a new whirlwind skill.
Story and quest cut-scenes take place as fully animated, zoomed-in, inset windows, Blizzard explained.
Subsequent sections showed the barbarian, supported by two AI archers, scything through armoured enemies by getting them to drop their shields with powerful ground-pounding attacks. Dynamic scripted events take place during gameplay, with supporting characters' exclamations appearing in speech bubbles, the audience was told and shown.
After a boss fight with a grotesquely fat ogre, co-operative play was shown. The new player took on a witch doctor class who can possess his enemies and cast locust swarms. The witch doctor can also summon pets who can then be sacrificed in an explosion that will destroy nearby enemies. He was shown confusing his enemies into attacking one another and then killing them with explosive fireballs.
After a brief cameo from the series' popular character Deckard Cain, the action moved to an autumnal, soft-focus outdoor area - very WOW in graphical style.

The witch doctor's show-stopping skills continued. He summoned a wall of zombies to handle oncoming hordes.
Finally, female versions of the barbarian and witch doctor characters joined the fight for a spectacular boss battle with a giant armoured demon called a Siegebreaker Assault Beast. The monster's devastating blows toppled spires of rock nearby, before it was downed - and replaced with an army of skeletons emerging from the ground. Fade to black.
So there we have it - classic, co-opertiave Diablo with some mighty new skills, features focusing on ease of play, female and male models for every class, and stunning contemporary visuals and sound. We'll bring you more on Diablo III based on the rest of our time at the Worldwide Invitational, so keep an eye on the site for more.

Peripheral manufacturer In2Games has announced it is developing a Wii-like motion-sensing controller for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The Gametrak Freedom will, according to its manufacturer, be "the most advanced motion-sensing controller yet".
Describing the technology, the company's website states that the "system does not rely upon the gamer pointing a controller at the screen or restrict the gamer to limited movements".
"Instead, it combines patent-pending ultrasonic and RF technologies with three-axis accelerometers to track the precise absolute position and orientation in 3D space of almost any wireless accessory such as golf clubs, baseball bats, tennis racquets, and bowling balls".
The first title in development for the new system is entitled Squeeballs, but no further details of the game are available as yet.
A release date for both Gametrak Freedom and Squeeballs is yet to be announced, but In2Games confirmed it will be 'soon'.
